Essence of…Live from Baltimore!

“I believe you make your own luck. My motto is ‘It’s always a mistake not to go.’” –Tom Brokaw, Parade Magazine, May 1, 2015

I posted this quote exactly one week ago today on my personal Facebook page, before I hopped in the car and drove to my summer adventure. I’m not this person. I don’t pick up everything and just go. I’m not spontaneous or adventurous really, but I’ve always wanted to be. The biggest risk I take occasionally involves something like swapping “mild” for “medium” when I order Indian food.

So I guess now I am. It’s not like I’m terribly far from what I know: Manhattan is about four hours away; my best friend in New Jersey, maybe two hours and forty-five minutes; home is about six, not including when I-95 turns into a parking lot.

I’ve escaped to Baltimore for the summer and I’ve come here at an interesting time, huh? I was offered an internship opportunity of a lifetime at WBAL-TV in their sports department, a gig many would likely knock me unconscious to get, since most of my work will include putting together highlight reels, pre- and post-game Orioles coverage and trips to Ravens training camp. If you love sports as much as I do, none of that really sounds like work. (Sorry, not sorry.)

Anyway, so I’m here. Essence of Erika does Baltimore. This is basically how my old blog, Shoes, Shirts & Other Sh!t all began. I told you my adventures in Manhattan Harlem after I’d survived my first week…and in case you forgot how that ended up: (Fashion Week, parties, private product launches, showroom invites, exclusive events, sponsorship opportunities, celebrities…etc.)

With Meg and some new friends over the weekend

I survived my first week. I found the grocery store, Target, discovered which Starbucks to avoid, where to never order Chinese from, driven home a few times without my GPS, walked the neighborhood, gotten locked out while cooking dinner, set off the smoke alarm, made some friends. Not bad for seven days’ work!

By the way, h/t to my upstairs neighbors Ken and Gary for helping me break into my apartment when I got locked out. I owe them drinks. And thanks to Megan and all her amazing friends for welcoming me into their circle and getting me out and about on Memorial Day weekend!

I’ve got a little less than a week left before I start my internship, and plenty of exploring to do. I’ll be here through the end of August before I trek back to Massachusetts for my last semester (FINALLY!!!) as a journalism undergrad! It’s really happening, eight years in the making (more on being real-life Van Wilder later).

I’m looking forward to exploring Baltimore and this entire part of the country, meeting new people, catching a few O’s games (as a fan!), getting some visitors from my friends “up north,” and so much more!

Do you have any must-sees or must-dos for Baltimore or the mid-Atlantic while I’m here?
