Essence of Beauty: Getting pretty with Simple® Skincare

Once I really got back into the swing of things with this blog, I began reaching out to many of my old contacts from my old blog to see how we could work together to create great content for you and of course, my friends at Simple® Skincare came through with tons of goodies for me to try out.

I had never actually tried Simple before, it was brand new (at least, to the US) and possibly pitched to me just once before I decided to close the doors on Shoes, Shirts & Other Sh!t and start fresh. Of course, I’ve seen it around, but I’ve mainly had the same skincare routine for the last few years now that’s been working well for me and when that happens, you don’t usually want to mess with it.

But I wanted to mess with it. I’ve been breaking out more than usual lately and in general, my skin looks tired. I know I haven’t been able to drink as much water as I’d like to, or get as much rest as I should be with three different jobs and school occupying so much of my time.

Simple® turned out to be a perfect change for me because I do have super sensitive skin (hence, not wanting to mess with the routine) but shaking it up didn’t ruin anything–it actually made it much better! Normally I change products and my skin gets either super oily or super dry or I break out like crazy…one time, I even broke out in hives 30 seconds after applying a masque. It was terrifying. One time, it happened while I was getting a facial…in a retail store…with a famous esthetician.

So long story short, I grabbed what I knew I would be able to immediately start using out of the box of goodies–face wipes (because I’m lazy), eye makeup remover (for the best mascara in the world “They’re Real” by Benefit), night cream, daily moisturizer with SPF 15, foaming face wash, and possibly my favorite find–the under eye roller.

The first thing I went for was the Exfoliating Facial Wipes, which were perfect since I was coming off a “TV makeup” day as I like to call them–one of those days where I’m on camera and I need far more makeup to appear human than in real life. This wipe literally got everything off face, has texture to scrub your skin on one side, and then a smooth side to refresh on the other. Obsessed. The wipes contain everything from Vitamin E and Aloe to moisturize, to Sodium Citrate to exfoliate the skin and work like a charm.

Best thing after a night out? The Radiance Cleansing Wipes. These wipes have mango and ginger extract to help you erase the night you just had from your face. Next summer (or if you live somewhere that’s warm year-round) I’m going to throw a pack of these in my fridge to cool down on hot days.

It was also seriously refreshing to find a moisturizer with SPF that doesn’t make me oily (even though most claim to be oil free) and that doesn’t make me break out. My face hates sunscreen, so the Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF 15 was a great find.

I break out from it every time I go to the beach or even try to put on a moisturizer that contains it. I know this is bad and you should wear sunscreen daily, but…it just doesn’t work me. I usually just use a concealer with SPF so I can protect around my eyes, the most delicate skin on your face. So this worked out for me as well: I didn’t break out and I didn’t look like I splashed olive oil on my face halfway through the day. Win-win.

I also am a big fan of the Nourishing 24 Hour Day/Night Cream, while it made me a little oily during the day, it was a perfect hydrant at night for my skin. I’ve been pretty much skipping night cream altogether since I tend to just use a retinol product at night these days, but not anymore. I love how much brighter my skin looks in the morning.

Now onto those eyes…as I mentioned, I’m super lazy about taking off my makeup, so anything that doesn’t require much effort after I’ve worked 15 straight hours sounds good to me. These eye makeup remover pads aren’t bad, and they aren’t oily like many makeup removers tend to be. Some reviewers on Simple’s website claim they had to use multiple pads to get their eye makeup off, but I’m willing to bet they must be rocking the raccoon look, because I didn’t have a problem. Even on a “TV Makeup” day, I was able to get my entire smokey eye (with primer), waterproof liner and waterproof mascara off with a few swipes. My only complaint is that I wish the pads were slightly more damp.

OK, now onto my favorite product of all: the Revitalizing Eye Roll-on. I sleep on my stomach (bad, I know) so I often wake up very puffy and with dark circles. Depending on whether I shower or I’ve showered the night before, the first thing I do is wash my face….then I apply this stuff. Before I put anything on, I let it settle into my skin for about five minutes and by the time I moisturize and get ready to put makeup on, the puffiness has almost completely disappeared. Once I get my makeup done, it’s usually gone altogether. The roller has cucumber and alfalfa in it, so basically it’s like getting a facial at the spa and getting cucumbers put on your eyes, without all the wait time!

The Verdict: I’m not planning to switch back to my previous skincare routine, unless I start to have an issue, but I’ve been using these products for two weeks now and I think I would’ve already reacted by now. Simple® products seem to work really well for my sensitive skin, helping balance the oil and dryness issues that I have and preventing acne without anything I could potentially be allergic to! Plus, they’re super affordable which works with my tight budget and available pretty much everywhere from Target, to Walmart and even Ulta!
